| Course Descriptions: P 100 - PHARMACY FUNDAMENTALS (30 hrs) The student will learn about the history of pharmacy in the United States, the different types of pharmacies, and the responsibilities and limitations of pharmacy technicians in California. Students gain knowledge of and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing and record keeping of medications. Prerequisite: NONE P 101 - PHARMACY PROFESSIONALISM (30 hrs) In this course students will become familiar with how pharmacies function, to include the role of all personnel. The students will gain an understanding of the laws and regulations which govern the practice of pharmacy. An emphasis is placed on the responsibilities of professionalism in the pharmacy, to include confidentiality, standards, ethics and customer service. Prerequisite: NONE P 102 - PHARMACY OPERATIONS I (30 hrs) In this course students will acquire knowledge of and ability to carry out calculations required for common dosage determinations employing the metric, household and apothecary system; as well as the ability to convert between these systems. Students will learn how to perform dosage calculations. Prerequisite: Business Mathematics. P 103 - PHARMACY OPERATIONS II (30 hrs) Students will acquire the knowledge and ability to perform the manipulative and record keeping functions involved in and related to filling and dispensing prescriptions to the patients. Students will also gain a knowledge of and ability to perform procedures and techniques relating to manufacturing, packaging and labeling of drug products. Prerequisite: NONE P 104 - PHARMACOLOGY I (30 hrs) Students will be introduced to the science of pharmacology, including the evolution of medicinal drugs, legislation and regulation and the FDA. The mechanisms of drug actions and effects will also be taught, as will dosage forms and routes of administration. Prerequisites: NONE P 105 - PHARMACOLOGY II (30 hrs) The focus of this course is on the identification of drugs by category, name, and physical description. Emphasis will be on the pharmaceutics of antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals. This course will also cover antihistamines, decongestants, antitussives and expectorants. Both generic and trade name drugs will be discussed. Prerequisites: NONE P 106 - PHARMACOLOGY III (30 hrs) The focus of this course is on the identification of drugs, both generic and trade names, by category, name and physical description. Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of drug dosages, routes of administration, dosage forms and storage requirements. Students will study the uses of a wide variety of drugs, their side effects, adverse reactions and drug interactions. Concentration will be on the pharmaceutics of urinary system drugs, cardiovascular drugs, muscle relaxants and non-narcotic analgesics. Prerequisite: NONE P 107 - PHARMACOLOGY IV (30 hrs) The focus of this course is on the identification of drugs by category, name and physical description. Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of drug dosages, routes of administration, dosage forms and storage requirements. Students will study the uses of a wide variety of drugs, both generic and brand, their side effects, adverse reactions and drug interactions. Emphasis will be on the pharmaceutics of topicals and ophthalmics, as well as of hormones, chemotherapy drugs, vitamins and herbs. Prerequisite: NONE P 108 - PHARMACOLOGY V (30 hrs) The focus of this course is on the identification of drugs by category, name and physical description. Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of drug dosages, routes of administration, dosage, adverse reactions and drug interactions. Concentration will be on nonnarcotic analgesics, muscle relaxants, hormones and topicals. Prerequisite: NONE P 109 - PHARMACY INSURANCE (30 hrs) The student will become proficient in all aspects of pharmacy related third party insurance coverage. Students will learn how to identify, process and bill for prescriptions which are covered by insurance, and they will become familiar with the scope of the most common insurance carriers, such as Medi-Cal, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, PCS, and Paid Prescriptions. Prerequisite: NONE P 110 - COMPUTERIZED INSURANCE (30 hrs) The student will learn to apply computerized billing procedures. They will learn to access database information as well to maintain customer/patient records and accounts on a computerized system. Prerequisite: Pharmacy Insurance (P109) P 111 - PHARMACY TECH CERTIFICATION REVIEW (30 hrs) This course is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive review and practice prior to sitting for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. Prerequisite: P100 through 109 P 112 - EXTERNSHIP (120 hrs) Designed to give actual hands-on experience in a real world work setting. Prerequisite: All on-campus required coursework MB 200 - TERMINOLOGY ANATOMY PHYSIOLOGY (90 hrs) To acquaint students with insurance terminology, and the meaning and pronunciation of medical terms, including prefixes, root words and suffixes. The student will also learn provider abbreviations and appropriateness of services rendered as well as the names, pronunciation and locations of all principal parts of the body systems. B 210 - BUSINESS MATHEMATICS I (30 hrs) Basic computations; operation with fractions and decimals; conversions. B 310 - KEYBOARDING I (30 hrs) Instruction on basic keyboarding B 420 - WORD PROCESSING (30 hrs) Students will be given instruction in word processing concepts using MSWord. B 550 - COMPUTER SPREADSHEETS I (30 hrs) Entering data and applying formulas; creating accounting records on the computer using commonly found spreadsheet data. B 620 - JOB SKILLS (30 hrs) Office hierarchy; appropriate demeanor; job search techniques; preparing a resume. |
