Course Descriptions:
PTA 100 - Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (100 hrs)
The students will receive an introduction to physical therapy and associated terminology.
They will learn the component members of a rehab team, including medical specialists.
Students will also learn to take S.O.A.P. notes, understanding the importance, the purpose
and the legal aspects of those notes. (Prerequisite: None)


PTA 110 - Medical Office/Customer Service (30 hrs)
Students will learn the importance of legal issues, the names and usage of basic reference
books, basic medical abbreviations and symbols. Special attention will be given to customer
service including telephone techniques, appointment setting, scheduling and organizational
skills for an office.


PTA 220 - Physical Therapy Agents and Modalities (100 hrs)
This module will give students an understanding of and ability to aid the therapist in a
variety of therapy agents including heat therapy, hydrotherapy, cryotherapy and
heliotherapy. The student will learn both the concept and terminology for these therapies,
as well as the understanding of the equipment, precautions, indications and
contraindications of each. (Prerequisite: None)


PTA 330 - Electrical Modalities (75 hrs)
The student will study the concept of use of electricity in therapy for different types of
tissue: muscle, brain, fat, skin and bone; and will then concentrate on the three
classifications of frequencies. In studying the three frequencies (low, middle, and high) the
student will learn the different types of stimulation, equipment, precautions, indications and
contraindications. (Prerequisite: None)


PTA 430 - Ranges of Motion and Traction (30 hrs)
Students will learn exercises for range of motion and also be able to understand the normal
ranges of motion for each type (i.e.) flexion/extension, rotation/circumlocution, etc.) This
class will also cover the purpose and benefits of traction. Students will also become familiar
with the types of traction.


PTA 440 - Work and Ambulation (100 hrs)
This class will teach the student the basics of the various massage techniques (effleurage,
petrissage, frection and percussion), and therapeutic exercises associated with work and
ambulation. The student will also study the U.S. Federal Government guidelines for various
work categories. (Prerequisite: None)


PTA 650 - Externship (125 hrs)
Designed to give actual hands-on experience in a real work setting this course is the
culmination and application of the classroom learning. (Prerequisite: All on-campus
required coursework)


MB 200 - Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology (100 hrs)
This class will acquaint students with medical terminology, and the meaning and
pronunciation of medical terms, including prefixies, root words and suffixes. The student will
also learn provider abbreviations and appropriateness of services rendered as well as the
names, pronunciation and locations of all principal parts of the body systems. (Prerequisite:
None)


B 310 - Keyboarding I (30 hrs)
The student will learn proper keyboarding positions and techniques of keyboarding by
touch. The student will learn the entire alphabet, numbers, symbols and the function keys
on the keyboard. (Prerequisite: None)


B 420 - Word Processing (30 hrs)
Students will learn the basic features of MS Word, as well as the basics use of the
computers, printer, mouse and keyboard. (Prerequisite: None)


B 620 - Job Search Skills (30 hrs)
This course is designed to provide the student with basic job search competencies.
Composition of an effective resume is emphasized, along with instruction in writing a cover
letter, thank you letter, and any other communications which may be helpful with the
employment process. Discussion of job search techniques, including explanation of
appropriate dress and demeanor, as well as outlining employment resources, are a
significant part of the course. (Prerequisite: 50 percent of program credits)
